Fauna & flora

 Park Harold F. Baldwin has a large wildlife biodiversity. Close to one hundred species of birds have been identified on our site in the past years, including the peregrine falcone (source: ebird.org). The peregrine falcon is a species that is labelled as vulnerable and they nest on the rocky cliff face of the Pinnacle year after year. Numerous reptiles, amphibians and mammals have also been observed, such as the northern two-lined salamander, the wood frog, and the southern red-back vole. The flora that is present in the park is both divers and impressive. Close to 90 different plant species were identified by the students from the CÉGEP de Sherbrooke during a census in 2020. A terrain that changes with the altitude, diverse  types of soils and soil humidity (depending on the proximity to one of the numerous springs), the presence of an  expanse of open water, and areas exposed to both extremes of weather and strong light, create growing conditions favourable to a great variety of vegetation. The shade of the deciduous forest fosters some of the  prettiest spring flowers of Quebec such as Painted Trilliums, Lady Slippers, and Purple Fringed Orchids. A wide variety of ferns grows in the park including the Common  Polypode or Virginia Fern that carpets many of the enormous boulders, adding to the luxuriant verdure of the  woods.
